The mobile lane traffic control kits that VARS BRNO has supplied to the Road and Motorway Directorate contribute significantly to traffic calming during traffic restrictions on motorways. Based on sensor data, the fully automated system alters traffic signs to make traffic in the restriction as smooth as possible.

The set consists of a set of traffic signs that evaluate the traffic and adjust the speed in front of the restriction according to a given algorithm or trigger other scenarios—warning drivers of a traffic jam or diverting traffic to a detour route.

The system receives data from sensors deployed up to several kilometres before the actual traffic restriction. In addition to the speed and number of vehicles, it can also record the length of vehicles—thus distinguishing cars from trucks.

This gives the system an accurate overview of the traffic situation in the monitored section. The algorithm then autonomously evaluates the data and adjusts the traffic sign variables. VARS BRNO provided complete hardware and software for controlling the system. Each system consists of eight variable traffic signs, two Wavetronix detection radars, four Bluetooth sensors and ten power points.

Four sets were used in a pilot operation in 2022, operating on seven sections for a total of 424 days. For example, the mobile line control from VARS BRNO was installed in restrictions on the approach to Prague on the D11 motorway and the downstream section of the D0 – Prague city ring road or in risk restrictions on the D5 motorway example.
